Best Male Lead
Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
Ryan Gosling, La La Land
Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington, Fences

Best Female Lead
Isabelle Huppert, Elle
Ruth Negga, Loving
Natalie Portman, Jackie
Emma Stone, La La Land
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins

Best Director
Denis Villeneuve, Arrival
Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge
Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight

Best Picture
Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
* Hidden Figures
* La La Land
Lion
* Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

And the winners, which will not be edited after the winners are announced, will be:
Denzel Washington, Fences (because he was great in He Got Game in 1997)
Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins (because someone once mistook my wife for Meryl Streep)
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight (because no one else deserves it and my middle name is Barry)
Lion (because)

I used to keep track of the winners here:

But I'm not renewing that domain. I may update it as a reference at least for another few months, though.

* denotes that i've seen this movie

A couple of notes about the academy awards, in progress as I write ...

I worked at Warner Brothers in the mid 80s. I was there when The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and didn't win any. The next day, the whole lot had a bad case of the Mondays.

I don't think that will happen to La La Land. While La La Land is no match for Singing in the Rain nor for An American in Paris, it is a major departure from anything produced recently. It's not Chicago either, but still, it was a beautiful movie worth the cost of admission to see it on a big screen.

Second note, although I enjoyed Hidden Figures, as a IBM mainframe programmer, I must point out that it was far from accurate as to IBM mainframes.

Half-way through and La La Land had a win, so they will not be this year's The Color Purple.

Also, while I was at Warner Brothers, they produced Ishtar, starring Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman. With two big stars they were expecting a hit ... but it was a total flop. Internally, it was referred to as Ishtar the Duck, an unfair reference to Howard the Duck, which had five of the greatest minutes in motion picture history.

I don't understand why Jimmy Kimmel is host, not to mention that he is on TV at all. He's not funny. He's a no talent ass clown, if there ever was one.

Carolla carried Kimmel during the run of The Man Show.
